Our event “European responses to territorial conflicts in the EU” took place on November 7, 2023, in Brussels, and included interesting and powerful interventions from civil society, academics, researchers, journalists and scholars.

In the first conversation, the speakers gave their unique view on the role of EU institutions in the conflicts in Cyprus and Northern Ireland.

Umut Bozkurt, associate professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations, Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Cyprus, discusses the role of the European Union in the Cypriot conflict and how its involvement further complicated the dynamics on the island.

Nikos Skoutaris is an associate Professor in EU Law at the University of East Anglia, in his speech he is comparing the EU involvement in the two conflicts, focusing on the management of the borders of countries when EU law doesn’t apply on one side of the borders.

Colin Harvey, Professor of Human Rights Law in the School of Law, at Queen’s University Belfast presented the possible reaction of the EU institutions to an Irish unification.
