“Ethnic conflict and ethnic war are two very different things”

Dr. Corinne Bara discusses the difference of ethnic conflict and ethnic war

News / 05.9.23

Dr. Corinne Bara, a Senior Researcher at the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zürich was the first keynote speaker for our 13th Annual Summer School on National Minorities in Border Regions, in Belgrade.

One thing I tried to make clear is that both in terms of studying ethnic conflict and also resolving it is that ethnic conflict and ethnic war are two very different things.

We have many ethnic conflicts or conflicts that are about an issue that pertains ethnicity, that do not always turn violent.

So,  when explaining ethnic conflict we always need to be aware that a war takes much more.

It needs weapons, and fighters and the leadership that actually wants to perpetrate violence.

Thus it is very important to retain this differentiation when talking about ethnic conflict and resolution
