Cultural footprint: Strategies for the promotion of Emerging languages

Events / Thu 07 Feb 2013

Following the presentation in Strasbourg and Brussels, CMC brings now the case for a cultural footprint to Paris.

This conference proposes to discuss the concept of ‘cultural footprint‘ and examines its political implications.

The notion of ‘cultural footprint’ appears as an analogy to ‘ecological footprint’, used since the 1990s to measure the impact of human action on natural resources and on ecosystems’ capacity to regenerate necessary resources for continuity of life. Despite differences between the preservation of biological diversity or biodiversity, and cultural diversity, importing the idea of the “ecological footprint’ to a cultural context also means reasserting the importance of culture (in all its different tangible and intangible senses) to sustainable human development.

In addition, it shall focus on tools to protect and promote cultural and linguistic diversity in Europe. With special attention to strategies to promote emerging and lesser protected languages like Aragonese, Basque, Breton, Catalan, Corsican, Gaelic, Galician, Macedonian, Occitan or Sardinian.

Special importance will be given to editorial strategies to promote the above mentioned languages and how to ensure language revival through literature.
