Our event “Feminisms from the Peripheries” took place on November 29, 2022, in Brussels, and included interesting and powerful interventions from women activists, academics, researchers, journalists and scholars.
The first panel consisted of three different takes on the subject of activism and feminism for minoritised languages.
Mélanie Jouitteau, researcher at CNRS specialised in the Breton language, talks about the linguistic revitalisation and the feminist movement in Brittany. She argues that in Brittany the encounter between gender and linguistic domination has produced a split within the local feminism.
Eibhlín NicCormaic, a recent bachelor’s graduate from Ireland, speaks on the role of feminism and the Irish language among women Republican prisoners.
Idurre Eskisabel, journalist, researcher and writer, analyses the position of the movement in defense of a minority language from a feminist perspective.
Her main research lines are linked to gender and national identity. She explains how language operates as a domination device in the sex-gender system, leading women to have less voice in the public sphere. What happens then when the variables that intersect are two domination devices, meaning gender domination on the one hand, and linguistic domination on the other?
