On 22 March 2022, the Coppieters Foundation attended the 49th Session of the Human Rights Council, where the UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues Fernand de Varennes presented the report of the UN Minorities Forum. Over 670 participants contributed to these recommendations on Human Right, minorities and conflict prevention.

Indeed, many self-determination conflicts emerge from violations of the human rights of Indigenous peoples and persons belonging to ethnic, religious, and linguistic minorities, most frequently relating to the legal system, language, and culture.

This report underlined how violent conflicts have increased around the world in recent years and most of the drivers of these conflicts involve exclusion, discrimination and inequalities linked to violations of the human rights of minorities.
