Le Peuple Breton: Breizh gets on board!

News / 30.4.13

Several great news resulted from the General Assembly 2013 the CMC held two weeks ago in Meran, South Tyrol. Among them, we’re especially proud of the new incorporations to the CMC family. One is the signing of Professor Daniel Turp as member of our Scientific Board (learn more about this), and the other one is the approval of the historic magazine Le Peuple Breton as the latest member to join the CMC club.

Nil Caouissin, Le Peuple Breton representative at the General Assembly broke the news in Breton.

An exponent of Breton press

Founded in 1964, Le Peuple Breton (The Breton People) is the longest-running monthly magazine in Brittany. Although it is chiefly written in French, it also includes Pobl Vreizh, a section featuring content in Breton language. On January 2014, the magazine is expected to issue its number 600, quite a feat considering that all its reporters and contributors work as volunteers. Other elements make Le Peuple Breton a singular project: it doesn’t receive any funding other than individual subscriptions and a provision by the Union Démocratique Bretonne, the progressive, pro-autonomy party which since its foundation in 1964 has been linked to the magazine.

Despite Le Peuple Breton’s only recent accession, CMC’s interest for Brittany is not at all new. Examples of this are the feature interviews we recorded during our visit to the Expolangues language fair, in Paris, where we were lucky enough as to get Paul Molac, the most notable Breton member of the Assemblée Nationale, to explain us what is his role at the Parliament regarding the Breton movement.

We also spoke to Loeiz Le Bec, a member of the civic organisation Identité Bretonne, who told us more generally the evolution of the Breton language.

Once again, let us welcome Le Peuple Breton, make sure you follow them on Twitter and also on Facebook.
