Debating “The Reform of European Electoral Law” 2 July @ European Parliament (Brussels)

Politicians, academics and representatives of civil society convene on the occasion of the upcoming EFA conference “The Reform of European Electoral Law: An Opportunity to Strengthen the Democratic Legitimacy of the EU”, 2 July in the European Parliament, co-hosted by Josep-Maria Terricabras MEP, Jill Evans MEP and Jordi Sebastià MEP.

The conference stands in connection to the previous debate by the EurActiv Institute on possible changes to the primary European election system and transnational lists, where the Centre Maurits Coppieters and the European Free Alliance contibuted.

The following thematic priorities will be in the focus:

  • To what extent is the harmonisation of Electoral Law going to help reach that objective?
  • How can we foster the Europeanization of European elections?
  • How can we find a balance between unity and diversity?
  • What should be the role of regions and stateless nations in the rules to define constituencies?

Finally, Simon Toubeau, Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham and author of the Centre Maurits Coppieters report on ‘Electoral Contestability’will speak in the panel of the conference on 2 July.
