A delegation from Coppieters Foundation headed by the President Antonia Luciani is traveling to New York to resume its candidacy for consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council NGO Committee.
The UN ECOSOC coordinates global economic, social, and environmental efforts, engaging 54 member states and various specialized agencies. It serves as a central forum for inclusive dialogue and policy-making. One unique feature of ECOSOC is its engagement with NGOs, which are granted consultative status, allowing them to participate in its work.
The Coppieters Foundation promotes its candidacy to be recognized as a consultative entity of ECOSOC, with the aim of expanding its scope of intervention beyond the European Union.
During the Session of the ECOSOC NGO Committee, which will take place between 28 May and 5 June 2024 at United Nations Headquarters in New York, Coppieters President Antonia Luciani will address the representatives of the Member States of the Committee to present the Coppieters Foundation and the main milestones of its 15-year career.
After gaining experience in the European context, in 2018 the foundation decided to expand its intervention space to the United Nations, which led to the candidacy for ECOSOC in 2018. This decision relates to the concern of the European think tank regarding certain sociopolitical trends in the current world, especially those related to the weakening of democratic systems or threats to basic human rights, in addition to the environmental, economic, and social sustainability risks derived from the climate crisis.
In this context, the Coppieters Foundation considers the United Nations an essential space for the defense of peace, human rights, and conflict resolution.
The Coppieters Foundation’s agenda also includes meetings with entities and associations with representation in New York, such as the EU representation in front of the UN – a permanent observer of the UN. The delegation will also meet other institutions that work for human rights.
