The Centre Maurits Coppieters (CMC) is seeking to engage a researcher in the field of Euroregions and cross-border cooperation in order to develop a policy paper.
Background and main ideas to be developed:
The phenomenon of Euroregions has proven to be valuable to foster European integration and has successfully helped citizens to improve their daily quality of life. These cross-border cooperation structures have served to intensify local economic, social and cultural co-operation amongst peoples – in and outside the Union – by developing common activities in areas such as economic and regional development, job creation, strengthening of local and regional government functions, and improvement of communication.
CMC proposes a study of Euroregions based on three pillars: firstly, to give some examples of different nations which have their territory divided across two or more EU Member States. The paper should contain an in-depth reflection on the existing relations within these Euroregions territories and their existing cooperation strategies, which can be either operational or strategic. Secondly, it would also be interesting to focus on the legislative acquis that such regions have to further develop their cooperation. The Council of Europe and the European Union have already established important benchmarks with policies such as the European grouping of territorial cooperation (EGTC), for example. Lastly, the paper will explore additional ways to create new national institutions among divided stateless nations in the European Union in order to overcome the obstacles hindering cross-border cooperation
When applicable use NUTS-2/NUTS-3 statistics.
