Daniel Turp, Professor at the Faculty of Law of the Université de Montréal, delivered a speech titled “Self-determination and Right to Decide in the 21st Century” during a dinner-debate organised by CMC in Meran, South Tyrol. This 5-page document, on which Turp’s elocution was based, provides a valuable insight into the latest developments in self-determination movements in Europe and offers a wealth of arguments to support the peoples’ « right to choose » and the States’ « obligation to negotiate ».
Special attention is also given to (1) those nations having engaged in independence referendums and (2) applicable international law in the event of the creation of a new state.
