Position on Tourism in Europe in view of European Commission’s Action Plan for Tourism

In view of the public consultation launched by the European Commission (EC) on the future of European Tourism with the aim to better identify its key challenges and opportunities and help revising, if necessary, the Action Plan for the sector adopted by the EC in 2010, the Centre Maurits Coppieters (CMC) joined the conversation with the current paper.

Having regard the CMC Paper named “Tourism and Identity” written by Marien André, lecturer in Applied Economics at the University of Barcelona and published in 2011, CMC focused on a selected set of recommendations of the above mentioned EC Action Plan which we felt urged to highlight, amend or discuss. We fully agreed with the new political framework for tourism in Europe which the EC wrote in June 2010 which underlines that tourism is a key industry in Europe but CMC wanted to go beyond this and pointed out identity as a powerful catalyst to ensure quality in the field of tourism. Identity could be, indeed, a key trigger for success.
