In view of the report submitted by the High Level Group (HLG) on Media Freedom and Pluralism, the Centre Maurits Coppieters joins the conversation, answering the call for a Public Consultation on the topic by the European Commission (EC).
Rather than commenting on all 30 recommendations put forward by the HLG, we focus on a selected set which we feel urged to highlight, amend or discuss. Overall, in our view the report is on the right track towards “A free and pluralistic media to sustain European democracy”, as declared on the report title. Nevertheless, we wish to stress the unique role and responsibility the EU has in guaranteeing pluralism in all European media, from local to Union-wide, where state governments too often fail.
