What’s going on in Catalonia?

Events / 08.6.17

What’s going on in Catalonia was a joint initiative of Sobirania i Justicia and Centre Maurits Coppieters. The conference brought to Brussels independent voices of Catalonia from the academia, civil society, and business associations with the aim of bringing first hand information on the independence process to international audiences.

After six years of massive demonstrations, the pro independence movement continues to grow in size and strength, social support for an independence referendum nears 80% – according to polls. 61% of Catalan Parliament also supports it.

Bridges are broken and there is no dialogue between Madrid and Barcelona, will we see a a peaceful and, democratic resolution of the stalemate? What’s Europe’s position on the issue? Can the EU prepare for Catalan independence? Is internal Enlargement of the Union the only viable solution  to secure EU citizenship for 7 million Catalans?
