Media and plural identities in a multicultural Europe

Exploring media landscapes and opportunities for creating a new public broadcasting service that protects multilingualism and minority languages.

Events / Thu 21 Sep 2017 09:00

Audio-visual media plays a key role in contemporary societies. They are essential tools for the social construction of reality as they disseminate information, spread values, define collective and political identities. State and state-wide media share common stories that we absorb without realizing it. Minority cultures, in contrast, aspire to have their own public broadcasting service in order to satisfactorily expose local realities, articulate their own identity, their internal diversity and openness to the world.

The aim of this workshop is to explore media landscapes, bringing together experts to present the challenges and opportunities of creating a new public broadcasting service that is able to achieve a balance between tradition and modernity, information and entertainment, as well as the protection of minority languages and multilingualism. The workshop will compare experiences in several European countries from different perspectives: political initiative, legislation, resources, broadcast structure, content selection and policy.
