Language diversity promotion in Central Europe

Events / Tue 22 Nov 2022 11:00

Languages determine the identity of each individual, but they are also part of our common heritage. They connect us with other peoples and cultures and contribute to mutual understanding and a common sense of European identity. Effective multilingual policies and initiatives open up more opportunities for citizens. Language skills increase theirs employability, facilitate access to services and rights, and stronger intercultural dialogue and social cohesion strengthen a sense of solidarity.

Coppieters Foundation and the Free State of Rijeka Association organize a conference on the protection of linguistic diversity in the cities of Central Europe. At the conference, the experiences and the different practices of several multicultural backgrounds all belonging to Central Europe as historically multilingual environment will be shared.

A special part of the conference is dedicated to the protection of indigenous languages spoken in that area (Istro-Venetian, Fiuman, Istro-Romanian, Chakavian) and which are part of the region’s intangible cultural and historical heritage. Speakers will focus on the current state of protection of these languages and the need for greater institutional protection in the direction of their preservation as a protected cultural intangible heritage.
