On 24th November 2018, Coppieters Foundation will honor Mr Edmond Simeoni as the 2018 recipient of the Coppieters Awards at an official award ceremony in Ajaccio/Aiacciu.
With this award, Coppieters will recognize Mr Simeoni’s strong commitment to the defense of the principle of subsidiarity and devolution for Corsica and Europe.
He will be honored and thanked for a live of dedication and political work for devolution and as an advocate of peace in the island.
What are Coppieters awards?
The Coppieters Awards are an initiative of the Coppieters Foundation to honour individuals and organizations that, like Maurits Coppieters himself used to, stand out in defence of cultural and linguistic diversity, inter-cultural dialogue, self-determination, rights of minorities, peace, democracy and a united Europe. The main objective of the Coppieters Awards is to give recognition to persons and organizations that have successfully managed to find innovative ways to advocate for and embody these values.
Who is Edmond Simeoni?
Edmond Simeoni is the father of the modern Corsican national movement, being the founder of Action Regionaliste Corse (the first autonomist organization) in 1970.
In 1975 he led the autonomists in the Aléria incident; as a result he was imprisoned for sixteen months.
He led the electoral list of Corsica Nazione in 1992, which become the second largest electoral force in the island for the first time in history.
The pioneering struggle of his generation was the first step in a path that has led the Corsican national movement to become the strongest political force in the island, to the point of reaching an absolute majority in the Corsican election of 2017. This has put Corsican national demands in the French political agenda, which has in turn strengthened all European stateless national movements in their fight for cultural, social and economic rights against nationalistic states.
